Paulette Van Der Beck (Juliette Binoche) and her husband (François Berléand) have been running the housekeeping school of Bitche in Alsace-Moselle for many years. Their mission is to train teenage girls to become the perfect housewives at a time when women were expected to be subservient to their husband. After the sudden death of her husband, Paulette discovers that the school is on the verge of bankruptcy and has to take her responsibilities. But while preparations are underway for the best housekeeping competition TV show, she and her lively students start questioning their beliefs as the nation-wide protests of May 1968 transform society around them. English How to Be a Good Wife has at first glance an enticing premise and a really promising cast of three typologically completely different actresses: Juliette Binoche, Yolande Moreau, and Noémie Lvovsky, but it all falls apart due to a futile story and untapped potential, both in the characters and the setting, which is a real shame. The message framing is obvious and could easily have found its place in today's glut of feminist-themed films, but I still felt it could have been made in a more lively and humorous way. The final dance and music number had its charm, but it didn't fit the concept of the film at all. Better two stars! ()
