The film explores life in Angola, a country ravaged by continuous warfare for the past 30 years. After gaining independence from Portugal, the country became a Cold War battleground involving both South African and Cuban troops. Despite the end of the Cold War, the civil war has raged on and today is virtually isolated from the rest of the world. Spread throughout Angola are millions of land mines manufactured by arms makers all over the world. The economy and social structure are devastated, towns and villages have been destroyed, poverty is rampant, and children have grown up without ever having known anything but war. The "forgotten people" of the film are child soldiers, vagrant children and families victimized by violence and absolute poverty, but also women who develop initiatives to improve their own situation and that of others.
