Screen legend Michael Caine is a British secret agent targeted for death by friend and foe alike in this riveting tale of mystery and suspense directed by the great Don Siegel. This breathless story of international intrigue finds a determined Caine taking up the revenge trail when ruthless gunrunners kidnap his young son and demand a king’s ransom in uncut diamonds for the boy’s release. With each new lead Caine’s chilling quest becomes increasingly deadly as he begins to suspect that one of his colleagues is in league with the merciless abductors. (Kino Lorber)

Caine and Pleasance are excellent, Siegel's typical direction doesn't disappoint (but don't expect action until sixty minutes into the film), the decent soundtrack by Budd is nice to listen to... But it's still missing something. A proper, more thoughtful story, I'd say. A great final three-quarters of an hour earns it three-and-a-bit stars. ()
