Do you live or are you being lived? Barbara den Uyl puts this grand question to the six people in her volleybal team. In these portraits of Dutch people who grew up during and after the war, the influence of their upbringing on their lives is examined. An upbringing which was often dominated by the calvinistic morals of being satisfied with what you have, not demanding anything of anyone except yourself, never disappointing anyone. Some can live with that, others are burdened by it, hesitate to express themselves, are afraid of intimacy. Just as if planned, all players leave employment prematurely. One out of free will, the other from sheer necessity. Their lives have to be remodelled. In the volleyball game, the players come together, their characters are reflected in their movements and thus the game refers to the Dutch national character.
