Pataki decides to leave the co-operative, because it is possible now and they will be private farmers again together with Farkas Sándor, the fiancé of his daughter. Mari, however, loves Máté, though Máté has bound his own life with the fate of the co-operative as well, he does not want to live in the old way. In a wedding party Máté and Mari dance with each other, they are happy, just like on the merry-go-round not so long ago. Pataki forbids his daughter from Máté, Farkas urges the marriage. Mari protests, Pataki in his anger throws an axe to her, Mari in return leaves the parents' house. Máté finds her between the rails. He takes her home and announces to Pataki, that he will marry Mari. Pataki is compelled to admit: both family and society have changed irretrievably. (official distributor synopsis)
