The Affair (2019)

English I really like the development of Julius Ševčík's loose retro trilogy, Normal the Düsseldorf Ripper, A Prominent Patient, and The Affair. I didn't believe in him at first, but few people perceive the period atmosphere in such a high aesthetic quality. Anyone who is going just to see another Roden film will be disappointed, and anyone who doesn't understand that this is an adaptation of fiction from the pen of Simon Mawer will also be disappointed. But everyone else can have a truly extraordinary sensory experience. The idea of following a lesbian romance against the backdrop of the fate of a functionalist villa is simply beautiful. Hanna Alström and Carice van Houten are literally beautiful in their contrasting roles. I will gladly return to the emotions and images of this film.

Their Own Desire (1929)

English Norma Shearer's first sound films are incredibly awesome. Great stories, perfect costumes - Norma plays the roles of her lifetime. It must be experienced because words cannot just describe the feelings of the experiences of this watershed time. One can only regret that such a carefully constructed image of an independent woman had to take over after 1934, but that is another story. Pre-code Norma is MGM's brightest star.

Boy Erased (2018)

English The topic of re-education is very important. It is important to talk about the limitations that are still happening, limitations that are destroying the lives of many families even in the 21st century. The mindset of people who still believe that homosexuality must be managed as a disease is a problem. This is also not only about the USA and its religious movements. Still, I don't think Boy Erased is an outright good film, but it is strong in terms of the acting. Nicole Kidman routinely handles the role of a mother in a difficult situation, and this isn't the first time she's chosen a role from a story based on a searing true story. Russell Crowe has matured into a paternal psychological position that suits him very well, and it is only thanks to him that we get a catharsis of understanding. Boy Erased is not a cinematic experience - it is a cinematic manifesto for a modern understanding of family.

Tess of the D'Urbervilles (2008) (series)

English With a cast that includes Gemma Arterton, Eddie Redmayne, and Hans Matheson, Tess' story becomes very relevant because they are the faces of today. Thomas Hardy's world has never been an easy one to understand, much less to sympathize with. It is therefore very important to repeatedly face the challenges posed by adaptations of his works. This BBC mini-series is not tainted by the tragedy of Polanski's life, it's just very faithful. Luckily. The ending at Stonehenge was epic. I would love to see a similarly successful adaptation of "Jude the Obscure." #bbc

Riverdale (2017) (series)

English Thanks to Riverdale and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, the Archie comics phenomenon has come to the Czech Republic. No one would have ever believed that the never-ending story of high school friends would still be popular, even though its origins date back to 1939. That irresistible charm applies to every generation: there's Archie, the redhead, there's Betty, the blonde, and there's Ronnie, the brunette. That combination is enough to attract attention for 80 years. The Riverdale of today's generation is less comedic, more mysterious, and very theatrical, with an aesthetic often tending towards Tim Burton's films, and yet, or perhaps because of it, it is very attractive.

Misery (1990)

English After a fresh experience from Studio DVA, where Zlata Adamovská is irresistible in Misery, I had to check out the film. Kathy Bates, of course, is awesome. I've been hooked on her acting in American Horror Story for years, and Misery was her ticket into that world. Now I just have to compare the fact that in King's dramatization for the theater, there is more room for the absurd world of romantic fiction, while the film is more restrained in this respect. The theater also works better with the time of revelation. However, it's a wonderful topic anyway and I'm looking forward to the book all the more.

Heartland - Season 8 (2014) (season)

English What's really cool about this series is the romance between the aging Chris Potter (Queer as Folk) and the ageless Vicky Pratt (Mutant X). Both were very much eye candy when they were younger, and years later together they give hope to those who wouldn't believe in mature love. He's pleasantly distracted, and she's incredibly sexy. As for the rest of the series, it turns out that jumping in halfway through is absolutely no problem. I'm curious to see what happens in the next season.

Heartland (2007) (series)

English A nice girly series based on the book series of the same name by Lauren Brooke. Also joining the cast in seasons 8 to 13 was Vicky Pratt, a Canadian actress famous for her sci-fi, fantasy, and disaster movies and TV shows, now the heroine of many Lifetime movies and stories about women for women. The Heartland environment was a whole new challenge for her, which she handled perfectly.

Riverdale - Season 1 (2017) (season)

English This high-school clique seems quite normal. Yet they all have their secrets, relationships are the main theme of their lives, and their town is controlled by two key families. Will those who write the local newspaper or those who make maple syrup prevail? As absurd as it sounds, that's exactly what this is. The first season of Riverdale is very watchable. The kids are always right, their parents are the ones who make the mistakes and the target group is perfectly happy. The adult decisions are not made by daddy "Dylan" (Luke Perry), but by his son Archie. Ronnie's mother is the one who is making mistakes, but Ronnie herself is the one who has to keep the family together, even though her father is in jail. And Betty? Only thanks to her will the air around her sister's affair be cleared, Montague and Capulet style. I'm torn, but I kinda wish I could have graduated high school with this group of kids ;)

The Carrie Diaries - Season 2 (2013) (season)

English The Carrie Diaries is a piece of work that doesn't understand itself. In theory, it takes place just 12-14 years before Sex and the City, and the main attraction of its 2nd season is a young Sam Jones. But it only works if we forget about an adult version. We follow the supposedly cool stories of mid-80s kids as they transition from high school to college, but they're all so out of character that it hurts. Kim Cattrall has let it be known that she's done playing Sam and doesn't care what happens to the character... High school dramas simply have completely different rules than provocative adult series. Unfortunately, the final was also disappointing.
