Anthropoid (2016)

English I'm very much looking forward to the dubbed version, which is probably a first. But otherwise, I have to admit that Anthropoid is a tasteful perspective from the outside and a good counterpart to The Assassination. The Czechs have small roles and, led by Aňa, they add to the atmosphere and the final shootout will make you hold your breath and keep your eyes wide open.

Fifty Shades of Grey (2015)

English A popular little film serving as an illustration for a popular little book. I'm kind of curious if it will be as famous as Nine 1/2 Weeks or Basic Instinct years from now. But I think the whole trend is more likely to be forgotten.

Láska je láska (2012)

English Listening to Milan Cieslar speak was just horrible. How can anyone fall like that? Anyway, we have a new great pair of romcoms in the Czech style. In short, films that we simply don’t need.

Veni, Vidi, Vici (2009)

English This is a great amateur film that has ideas… Well, unfortunately, only one. The rest is just a prime example of the fact that even the technical crew was probably not complete. After all, good actors play dickheads, and the leads are the ones who should be glad for some extras here and there.

A Bigger Splash (2015)

English Unbeknownst to me, I was thinking the whole time: "They're dealing with the same thing Romy Schneider did years ago!" And I wasn't wrong. However, it doesn't matter, this new The Swimming Pool ideally fulfills all the needs of a summer movie theater visit when it's convenient to catch up on your own sun glare. Besides, it is very nice to see Tilda Swinton now and again.

Car Fairy Tales (2011)

English A very enjoyable and novel range of animated fairy tales, which unfortunately are connected by a not-very-functional acted storyline. But the first story, The Princess Who Didn't Laugh, is very sweet. The Accountant and the Fairy is absolutely charming, especially thanks to Viktor Preiss' performance, the styling is charming and even Lucie Bílá surprises us at the end. The Fisherman Maršíček is appealing mainly with the idea of flat animation in a real environment, and Vincent is there for the children who grow up on modern graphics without a speck of nostalgia. I recommend it.

Cassandra's Dream (2007)

English An uninteresting drama that very blatantly points out the sophistication of ancient sin transplanted to the present day. Allen-esque disappointment all the way. And McGregor's dating the likes of Ashley Madekwe and Hayley Atwell.

Café Society (2016)

English Last time, I was quite enthusiastic about Magic in the Moonlight, but Café Society is even better. I haven't experienced this much authentic happiness from interwar Hollywood in a long time. There are plenty of excellent details, winking, and playing with names and projects, as well as the classic relationship analysis. It's not necessary to enjoy a romance that isn't quite tip-top, but if you appreciate art deco and a zillion references to all those names like Gloria Swanson, Barbara Stanwyck, Ginger Rogers, or Jean Harlow, you've come to the right place. The costumes, the sets, and the atmosphere are all top-notch, and only after all this did I realize that the make-up is not period-based, but fortunately, that doesn't ruin the whole (which is an interesting paradox).

Kinsey (2004)

English This is a film I've been saving for a long time. And it paid off. It is always good to be reminded of the paradoxes of American democracy, which has always been, is, and will always be very hypocritical. And now we can cheer for the series Masters of Sex because statistics are a joy.

Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason (2004)

English A dysfunctional something with a tragic chapter in a Thai prison. And for Renée Zellweger to destroy herself like that? Pure futility. But we all still pretend it's a timeless romcom that will entertain absolutely everyone.
