War of Colours (1995)

English Twenty years after its premiere, it is finally possible to return to War of Colours in a reasonable format and enjoy everything I love about Czech films from the 90s. All the discoveries of the Western style of storytelling, all the montages and clip passages, the attractive setting, the ingeniously written roles for the local actors, and the unique feeling of that high when even little Aňa with a blonde wig could conquer the world. Her wonderfully childish dialogues about first love, betrayal, and the big world are a treat to listen to. Of course, the modeling environment also does its job, and also the well-chosen (not only) Prague locations. The worldly Hanák is also absolutely great, even better next to the homely Vaculík. Ah, the golden '90s!

Christina Aguilera, Lil' Kim, Mya, Pink: Lady Marmalade (2001) (music video)

English At the time, I found "Lady Marmalade" to be the only track on the Moulin Rouge! soundtrack to be unsatisfying. But as a standalone burlesque video it's good, and from today's perspective it's certainly interesting that only Aguilera and Pink survived.

Paddington (2014)

English A cute family film based on classic children's literature, which has not yet taken up residence in the Czech Republic. The stories of the teddy bear from darkest Peru are, after all, too closely linked to London and colonial poetics. Filmed very skillfully, it bets on certainty and fans will be attracted by a wide star spectrum that includes Nicole Kidman and Gwen Stefani. Kidman is betting on a new variation of the villain she last tried in The Golden Compass. Her new straw-colored mikado and perverse tendencies suit her with a naturalness that is all her own. And Stefani sang a new song with Pharrell for the credits to remind her listeners that she's a mom herself. All in all, this is a genre surprise that I can recommend.

Louise Brooks: Looking for Lulu (1998)

English Brooks' life from a - z. Lulu in Hollywood, Berlin, and Hell. The fascinating life of a woman who made several key decisions during her career and became immortal against all odds. Or the friends at George Eastman House and their ability to work miracles.

Tři spory - Spor herečky Kvapilové (1982) (episode)

English There’s a fascinating feminine theme that can be found here. Although today, more than 100 years after Hana Kvapilová's death, it is admirably difficult to engage our full imagination to grasp even partially the nature of her acting and thus to understand its meaning. Unforgettable.

Tři spory - Spor dramaturga Stroupežnického (1982) (episode)

English This work by Dietl is very inspired by the premiere of the Czech play "Naši furianti" (Our Swaggerers). I must admire and discover, perhaps for the first time in my life, a real enthusiasm for the events surrounding the Golden Chapel. Just the reconstructions of those considerations around set design alone make me applaud.

Tři spory - Spor architekta Zítka (1981) (episode)

English Overall, a wonderful to excellent triptych on the theme of the backstage of the Prague National Theater opened with this chapter from the aftermath of the fire. It is necessary to admire and educate yourself in a non-violent way and quickly move on to the next episode! There is no other way.

Every day - Sunday (1962)

English A charming co-production melodrama, which is carried entirely by the tender performance of the beautiful Jana Brejchová. I have a soft spot for Jana, and I can understand the civil story of a young marriage based on the (un)practicality of two artists. But what is also really interesting is the attractive co-production with Hungary. And it is simply a small miracle to see Jana carefully representing Czechoslovakia in cooperation with the USSR, East Germany, West Germany, Austria, etc. She never had a great international career, unfortunately, but it's an interesting overview. Now I find myself still longing for another Hungarian film with Jana, after Recovery, and then hopefully I'll be satiated.

Tragic Monday (1960)

English Tragic Monday offers a truly intense viewing experience. Vošmik works very well with the child actors, while the adults have the opportunity to act out separate stories that in other hands would require a whole series of melodramatic films. Tragic Monday is a film of a similar ilk to Conscience in that it is suffocating through every minute of it. It's really up to you whether you want to indulge in such an experience.

Birth (2004)

English I waited a very long time for a screening of Birth and it was worth it. Some topics really require you to be more mature. The inner world of a woman who was widowed in an instant was another strong challenge for Nicole Kidman's acting. Some emotions and feelings cannot be suppressed, love cannot be made to disappear, and sometimes even a lifetime is not enough for the soul to recover... The fragile condition that needs to be cared for is thus a daily reality and day by day it becomes more and more difficult to cope with the reality. A strong theme.
