Home Again (2017)

English This is one of those really weak romcoms. The idea is nice, but the execution is full of stupid clips about nothing. The only decent actor here is Reese Witherspoon, while Michael Sheen could have helped the film considerably if given more space, and unfortunately, the others only function as amateurs.

Doctor Sleep (2019)

English King's The Shining is quite an interesting long-running phenomenon, now comprising two novels (from 1977 and 2013), both of which have been made into films, the first also as a miniseries, and there's one more TV project to come, apparently called Overlook. So how good is the film version of Doctor Sleep? It’s a decent modern King film, with an excellent McGregor and a declaration of love for the original The Shining. It’s comparable to the new versions of It or Pet Sematary.

Eternals (2021)

English It's nice to also have Däniken in Marvel. I'm getting very picky about the MCU, I don't really need to see all the series, but this movie made me happy. Especially the reconstruction of the Ishtar Gate.

The NeverEnding Story III (1994)

English This is a horrible sequel that has lost any shred of judgement. The Child Empress is played by a twenty-year-old, and the original inhabitants of Fantasia more closely match the character designs of the later animated series. Even the antiquarian Coriander was suspended as a librarian in the school. Pointless pop culture references, unnecessary shopping mall scenes... Weak, very weak. Unfortunately, Ende lived to see it.

The NeverEnding Story II: The Next Chapter (1989)

English The second film isn't a terrible flop, it's just a cheaper film with different actors. From the second half of Ende's book it picks a simple linear line about Bastien in Fantasia, the main villain is the demonic Xayide, but unfortunately the film lacks the inventiveness of Bernd Eichinger…

Perikola (1984) (TV movie)

English Another operetta production from Lenfilm. The story takes place in Lima in the 17th century.

And Just Like That... - Hello It's Me (2021) (episode)

English The new generation has changed the style, the episodes are twice as long as the originals, but it still just goes on linearly in the same way with the same characters and their problems as it did years ago. So where's the problem? Back in the first series (1998), it wasn’t an issue for Carrie to be walking down the street with her gay friend and meet another couple who casually asked her if she would give them her eggs so they could start their own family... The series hasn't fundamentally changed and neither has the world around us, only a certain variety of viewers succumb to their own delusions and chimeras disguised as nostalgia.

Červený kapitán (2016)

English Michal Kollár made a fan tribute to his favorite book series (from the pen of mythical Slovak bestseller Dominik Dán). As a standalone film, The Red Captain simply doesn't work, and pulling just one story out of the whole cycle didn't work very well. At first glance, it looks like a backwoods TV crime drama; at second glance, one can discover an ambitious work with the realities of 1992. Although the likes of Kaiser, Geišberg, Finger, Chudík or Kronerová were able to create interesting characters even from what little they had, their overall interactions don't work. Maciej Stuhr in the lead role is problematic, we don't know his motivation, but we know we should consider him the protagonist. Suchánek plays like a parody and his tough talk cannot be trusted. Still, the questions and white spaces that arise can inspire one to gain familiarity with the book's world. And that is probably the only and primary good thing about it.

My Fair Lady (1964)

English This is a terrible monstrosity that’s too long, static, and incredibly outdated for its time. The musical itself has barely two memorable hits, and Cukor's film version is just a platform for the linguistic exhibitionism of Audrey Hepburn and Rex Harrison.

Na programu televize - V hlavní roli múzy (2021) (episode)

English As always, it has a great theme and great archive options, but the result? The commentaries of the story catchers and theoreticians sometimes sound like a parody of each other, sometimes the commentary says the exact opposite of what the commentator has been asked to say... Simply put, it’s un-conceptual chaos. A focus group made up of two people. Zlata Adamovská does not know the difference between a musical and an operetta, and Županič forgot that there are operettas with bad endings ("The Land of Smiles," "Giuditta"). But those demonstrations often help to direct the interested to the unsuspected.
