Tolkien (2019)

English There should be one more film to bring Tolkien's biography to its conclusion. These are just the younger years and a reminder of the fact that even "The Lord of the Rings" is just a response to the horrors of the Great War. Like anything written by the Lost Generation, including A. A. Milne. And of course, before the war, everyone, without distinction, went on dates by taking their sweethearts to Wagner operas ;)

Bombshell (2019)

English Jay Roach should get a kiss for the simple combination of Charlize Theron, Margot Robbie, and Nicole Kidman. An absolutely great film. A topical and important issue. And as a sweet treat, we have Robbie in the arms of Kate McKinnon. Hell has frozen over.

Giant (1956)

English What should you expect from the great Texas saga charting the story of a generation based on the novel by Pulitzer winner Edna Ferber? First off, a big widescreen color film, a screen on which Lizzy Taylor remains for three and a half hours, and James Dean spices it all up. In the 1950s, Hollywood didn't really care much about sets and costumes and how they evolved over time, so it's very difficult to keep track of the time jumps, you can only orient yourself by the cars or the age of the kids, and that’s not enough. Indeed, it's all a foreshadowing of Dallas, as the proclaimed mentality of Texas cattle chasers and oil tycoons is prescribed here in exactly the spirit the series would later build upon. Personally, I would recommend an older film, Boom Town with Clark Gable (1940), if you are interested in a similar theme. This experience with Giant falls into the category of pure reference.

How Not to Screw Up Your Life - Můj bezvadnej život (2019) (episode)

English A very good little big TV movie that could stand on its own. After all, the course of the protagonist's mysterious illness is more than realistic, although the finale is rather ridiculous. But as a solo Brodská film, it's ideal.

Miss Hanoi (2018)

English A very decent crime drama. The environment of the Vietnamese community is an excellent refreshment for the Czech context. Ha Thanh Špetlíková is very pleasant, David Novotný is a classic redneck and together they are the perfect pair for a trip from Varnsdorf to Sapa.

Shotgun Justice (2019)

English A situational comedy? A black comedy? An idea for an undergraduate short story? Radek Bajgar seems to like dealing with unreal situations in a typically Czech environment. His series work also refers to crazy normalization comedies and if in his feature project the focus is once again on the iconic face of Iva Janžurová, then that’s it. As a subject for a small TV movie, perhaps Shotgun Justice could have shone, but this is an unnecessary elevation of a banality to a feature film.

A Star Is Born (2018)

English A weak effort. It is much praised, but it is absolutely about nothing. The previous versions always copied the same situations, only the musical taste changed gradually. We can expect a film similar to this again in a few years.

The L Word: Generation Q (2019) (series)

English We've lived in the post-The L Word era for a decade, and we've lived through the reality show The Real L Word, but few would have thought we'd see a full-fledged sequel. And indeed, Generation Q is upon us. The new characters fit perfectly among the classic trio of Alice, Bette, and Shane. Angie has grown up and other characters are mentioned here and there... I hope GQ will be with us for a few very good years, because this bunch deserves it. Season 3 is coming soon.

Dear John (2010)

English Nicholas Sparks is the king of kitsch among women's novels, and his adaptations are exactly that. This one is at least somewhat elevated by a reasonably capable Amanda Seyfried, but Channing Tatum can't seem to work his facial muscles and walks around like a dummy for the entire film. On paper, it may be less appalling, although I don't put much faith in that either. An implausible exaggerated story with so many tear-jerking decoys...

Empire of the Sun (1987)

English An adaptation of the autobiographical book by J. G. Ballard was something I had been looking forward to for a long time. It has an interesting theme and a great cast (Christian Bale, Miranda Richardson, John Malkovich). Empire of the Sun may also remind us of The Lover by Marguerite Duras in its broad scope, but like other Spielberg retro films, I'm afraid it has become dated. This amounts to an interesting trip into the cinema of the 1980s. Young Bale was already incredibly talented back then, but for a deeper experience, you would need to see the film back then.
