Gold (2022)

English Watch how Zac Efron slowly dries out in the middle of the desert next to a huge nugget of gold. The attempt at being an artsy movie falls flat; the interesting camerawork does instill an artsy type of atmosphere, but Gold doesn’t just go deep enough. But we do get a great acting performance, supported by great peeling-face make-up. I’m gonna stay with the gold.

The Expanse - Season 6 (2021) (season)

English Incomplete. They simply repeated most of the interesting stuff from the last season, finishing up the political storyline and having a lot, a real lot of warring. Which is fine and done with quality, but we were mainly interested in getting to the bottom of some fundamental mysteries. The ones from last season. Why does the Ring gate break ships down into atoms? And a new one, how come dogs can revive dead birds?

Eternals (2021)

English Breathtaking scale, action with beautiful exteriors and a monumental story about nothing less than the reason for the continuation of our existence in the universe. Eternals is an untraditional family team movie that spans about 7,000 years during one strange pregnancy. Zhao has given a serious face to Marvel, introducing powerful topics and bringing everything to a satisfying ending, which promises great things in his future movies. The actors are well-chosen, the correct types and even though the inclusion is flagrant and makes you ask yourself "why?", it can be overlooked and excused as bowing to journalists, because it does more harm than good to the story. Let’s go to Ajak first. She’ll know what to do.

Encanto (2021)

English A splendidly merry cartoon, full of songs, which slowly turns into a gloomy family drama about unreal expectations and fear of failure. The fairytale place, the building (with special powers) and the family are the both lure and the catalyst of the main conflict. The unexpectedly adult (for a Disney movie) way the topics are introduced doesn’t discourage kids from watching; in fact it seems quite the opposite. The choreography for some of the songs is just fantastic!

Dexter - New Blood (2021) (season)

English A decent continuation, but weak ending to one of my favorite series. Dexter is back to reinstate his lost reputation and just a while after we get him exactly where we all wanted to see him and began purring with delight, the writers stick a knife in our backs and definitively bury the series with its illogical conclusion. Of course I am bothered by how things ended up with Dexter, but what most bothers me is how he acts completely against the grain of how his real me would behave and the incredibly improbable connection of flimsy clues from old cases. A good series, a crappy ending.

The Night of the Hunter (1955)

English A repulsive Robert Michum in the role of a murderer without a conscience who threatens his adoptive daughter with ripping off her arm if she won’t obey him. A beautifully filmed noir drama about stolen money and children who are supposed to look after it. The breakneck ending rather spoils the overall effect. An ode to the strength of children.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021)

English A laid-back movie that mainly encourages you to watch the two preceding two parts. All of the characters are just great, likeable and well-acted. The central heroine with the face of Mckenna Grace is just wonderful. The wonderfully well-depicted nerdy outsider status with young side-kick Logan Kim carries Ghostbusters along with him in amazing way. Raitman decided for a Stranger Things type atmosphere, and he was right, because they are - you have to admit it - almost the same thing.  Then he added the Ectomobile and some other contraptions from the original Ghostbusters. The ending is more like a big cameo show/farewell (which hardened fans will certainly appreciate) than a full-blooded conclusion. The attempt at a different approach takes it down a little, but I understand that without it everybody would be disappointed.

The Owners (2019)

English An hour and a half of concentrated depression. I didn’t see the play, but it must have made you think about ending it all after seeing it. The acting’s great, apart from some minor exaggeration and (in my eyes rather forced) attempts at humor, but this is popular with the viewers, so I quite understand. I was surprised how realistic the portrayal of the owners was, and I would have gone for a more vicious ending, causing greater catharsis.

The Matrix Resurrections (2021)

English An entertaining and surprisingly current coronavirus continuation. Reaction to the third Matrix will depend heavily on how much the viewers took the original trilogy, because the Wachowski sister keeps on making unhidden fun out of it from beginning to end. It mocks human sheep who want just to get on an enjoy life: why won’t the powers that be just leave them alone? It also ridicules the fact that this sequel was even being made, admitting that it was only for the money. Oh, and for love, love too. The special effects and action sequences are only mediocre, but the fights are at least quite easy to follow. All the revolutionary things that were so jaw-dropping in the first movie are now simply ordinary, expected, or else made fun of. The second half of this picture is rather headless chicken and a lot of things from it need explaining. I thought this movie lacked an overall message, but on the other hand I quite enjoyed watching this self-reflective or even cynical period to the series.

Cyborg (1989)

English Movies with pandemics now have completely different relevance. :-D The baddie with blue eyes could simply be any shareholder of a corporation that makes vaccine. Otherwise, this is the epitome of a B-movie, with an atmosphere reminiscent of Mad Max and pretty good fights, but the story left such a strong impression on me that this morning I no longer know how it ended. P.S.: Van Damme with a paintball gun in his hand is just perfect.
