The Outsider (2020) (series)

English An excellent production of King’s paranormal novel, which suffers a little in the conclusion from some changes made to the original story. The opening is procedural and ultra-realistic, reminiscent of True Detective. The choice of shots, the close-ups, Mendelson’s tired face of a burnt-out detective. And Bateman’s performance as the potential suspect is flawlessly insensitive. But the choice to make a ten-episode series out of it was unfortunate, because by the second episode, The Outsider starts to become inflated with filler, taking the story on often unnecessary detours. Not to mention the protracted dialogue scenes that make the heroes look like ignoramuses. Despite a change of origin, Cynthia Erivo is outstanding as Holly, even though she could have been more reserved (of course, there is a lack continuity from the preceding three books). The confrontation in the season finale is more terrifying in the book's climax (direct, with a catharsis that works) and the Texas setting is more interesting. Still, this is one of the best adaptations and I hope it gets another season with the same cast. Even with a boring, ordinary drug-gang underworld murder, as Ralph wished for at the end. P.S: While watching, we were switching between this and The Boss Baby and the contrast is really bizarre. :-D

Murder Mystery (2019)

English A crime movie perfect for all hairdressers, for whom the great Jennifer rules. Sandler’s variation on Agatha Christie, spiced up with a whole lot of priceless one-liners, rolls by pleasantly. Thanks to the excellent dubbing, the babbling Sandler seems like a typical Czech holidaymaker with a bad back focused only on food and sex. Super funny exchanges of opinion between husband and wife after years of married life, the beautiful Gemma Arterton and an energetic car chase at the end...I enjoyed it more than I am willing to admit. "There are bars on planes?! Damn! Shame my mum didn’t live to see it. She was an alcoholic!"

Extraction (2020)

English Little buggers. Chris Hemsworth beats Indian kids! With top-notch action scenes driven by a straightforward plot from an unknown comic book, Extraction benefits mainly from the mad verve of director Sam Hargrave, who didn’t hesitate to tie himself to the top of a car with a camera to get the desired result. And really the one-shot car chase in the Benz through a hostile Dhaka makes the film worth watching again and again. Kids with Kalashnikovs on every street corner, dirt, blood and slit throats stay the course set by Wick. The future of action movies is not rosy, it’s blood red!

Future Man - Season 3 (2020) (season)

English Based on a true story... The last season brings another whirlwind of crazy ideas. Space-time is collapsing and the only one who can save the present is Josh Future Man with a well-put final lesson on responsibility. Rogen’s Susan is superb, but this time more than ever, everything relies on the main heroes, who certainly seem to make the most of all the antics. An excellent season finale.

Caliphate (2020) (series)

English This European version of Homeland is tailored to address today’s migration issues. The Swedish know how to get the viewer hooked and  Caliphate gives all of the protagonists a hard time right from the first episode. Things begin to heat up for a woman who goes to Syria to find a better life, for a fanatical policewoman and also for a father whose daughter is fanaticized by craftily sent YouTube links. The film has momentum and verve, as well as often eye-opening lessons that might do some good for society. It's just a shame that at the end its creators shrank away from presenting the real moral of the story. Some characters behave irrationally and the twists are a bit odd, probably so it wouldn’t end up as badly as it might have. On the whole, Caliphate is a strong and thrilling film that squeezes the maximum out of the genre. A must see for all EMPs.

The Circle (2017)

English I was looking forward to a demonic Tom Hanks but it didn’t happen! The plot about installing Big Brother in every household wasn’t bad, but the film ends at the very moment when it could at last have started to operate in the nicely presented world. Emma Watson is pleasantly down to earth, but that’s more or less it. P.S. I liked the clean design of all of the apps shown.

Future Man - The Outlaw Wild Sam (2020) (episode)

English When you think it couldn’t get any more crazy, an version of Usama Bin Laden appears who doesn’t believe in God, is tolerant to gays and makes a great cup of tea. To add to things, spacetime is slowly collapsing in on itself. Genius!

Lost in Space - Impact (2018) (episode)

English Fantastic production design, likeable characters. It's one of those deus ex machina narratives without a major climax, but it's great as a diversion.

Designated Survivor - Pilot (2016) (episode)

English This is what happens when you don’t have a tough Jack Bauer, but a cute Maggie Q instead. It seems a bit weird having Kiefer as a peace-loving president, but from time to time we get a glimpse of him as we know and love him. And he sets everybody straight.

Spenser Confidential (2020)

English A serene (naive) old-fashioned crime movie with well-acted characters and perfect action. Berg and WahlBerg quickly put together this Boston-style Jack Reacher for Netflix and with great verve. Although the shaky screenplay is a little disappointing, Spenser gives us a generous portion of good mood.
