Pirate Family (1999) (series) Boo!

English I'm not sure what's worse about this film - whether it's the terrifying animation, dreadful artistic execution, or stupid script and dreadful dubbing. In the end, I was truly ashamed when I caught my daughter watching this series because it was evidence of my parenting failure. I need to keep my child engaged so they don't have the opportunity to spoil their taste in such a straightforward manner. Overall impression: 10%.

Pirate Radio (2009)

English This is a film that is much more about depicting the relaxed atmosphere of the 60s with the arrival of rock and roll, sexual revolution, and liberal society than telling a story. However, it suffers from the fact that despite the presence of numerous top-notch and popular comedic actors from Britain and overseas, the script fails to bring out fully developed characters from the actors and sell all members of the crew to the audience. Many of them are simply criminally underutilized. Pirate Radio is more of a mishmash of entertaining scenes, among which unfortunately there is also a fair amount of filler in the style of sex-crazed groupies, wild parties, and so on. At the same time, I think that even the main character could have been cast with a more charismatic actor and the script could have given him more space. Perhaps the best part of the movie is the moments with the minister, who is portrayed as a caricature of traditional British conservatism and puritanism. Overall impression: 65%.

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (2007)

English Each subsequent continuation of a commercially successful blockbuster usually means that its creators wanted to surpass the previous film by increasing the budget, adding more bombastic action, more special, more of everything, and yet occasionally a film comes along that surpasses its predecessor. Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End is no exception to this rule. It is a case of screenwriting orgies, where the screenwriters literally went of their way to fit as many "shocking" twists, betrayals of the main characters, and lightning-fast changes in the situation into one film. As a result, the script does not work, and even though it is a comedy, at times it reeks of self-parody. But there is still the bombastic set design with plenty of successful digital tricks, relatively decent action, mutual teasing, and lots of small jokes, which allows me to give it three stars. It is a typical popcorn movie, where it is better not to think much and just perceive the visuals and movement on the screen. Overall impression: 50%.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (2006)

English Pirates of the Caribbean unexpectedly became the most successful pirate film in the last 25 years, after the genre was perfectly discredited by romantic B-movie crap by second-rate directors. Pirates of the Caribbean was filmed with ease, humor, and originality, without much interference from the producers, so the crew had freedom, and, for example, Johnny Depp could afford to have his peculiar acting, portraying the pirate captain as a hippie who just smoked a joint. However, in the sequels, it is visible how much the studio had expected from the film, and this desire to fulfill obligations had an unfavorable impact on this film. Despite the high budget, the same cast, and ubiquitous effort, it is more cumbersome and over-embellished, and in the end, it doesn't hold together. Especially when, unlike its predecessor, it doesn't have a story with a point and not only leaves room for further sequels but rather feels like an episode from a series that ends with an invitation for the next installment through a cut in a suspenseful scene. Some scenes, such as the duel in the ruins of an old mill and the subsequent swordfight between the blades of a broken mill wheel, however, are highlights that adorn any top-notch blockbuster. Overall impression: 60%.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017)

English The Pirates of the Caribbean films were never clever but they were funny, entertaining, and catchy. In my opinion, with the fifth film of the series, they reached a stage of rotting where it hardly affects me anymore. The film doesn't even offend me and just evokes indifference and boredom. Perhaps I'm slightly concerned about the IQ of the target audience. If this kind of silly infantile entertainment can justify its existence and fill up cash registers, society is not heading toward a brighter future... Overall impression: 20% for the set design and special effects.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (2011)

English Of the entire Pirates of the Caribbean series, only the first film deserves any real recognition, as it represented a quite original blend of adventure, pirate spectacle, romance, and fantasy fairy tale, which rightly impressed audiences worldwide and brought generous profits to the producers. The subsequent installments only tried to squeeze as much as possible from the concept and relied on the classic formula and the support of blockbusters, i.e., a gigantic budget that would cover the script's weaknesses, stars in leading roles that would attract public interest, and of course, the advertising potential of the well-known series. I agree with the idea that the fourth installment represents a departure from the previous concept of an adventure spectacle toward pure comedy, led by Johnny Depp. He is the alpha and omega around which everything revolves, and surprisingly, along with a series of special effects and gags, that's enough to earn the film three stars. This is a classic popcorn movie that serves for immediate relaxation, allowing a couple to indulge in themselves for a while, munching on popcorn or drinking cola, without missing out on anything essential. Overall impression: 55%. Surprisingly, despite its numerous shortcomings, it is a little better than the overly stylized third installation in terms of motifs and production design...

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)

English At the beginning of the new millennium, no sane person would have bet even half a penny on a film with pirate themes. The theme was considered exhausted and outdated, and not suitable for the era of computers and genetic engineering. The last attempts in the genre field also ended in failure. The idea sat in a drawer for a while, but director Verbinski finally took the plunge when he came up with an original, action-packed popcorn spectacle for all generations, and with a hero who had never been seen before. Depp's pirate captain has a much closer resemblance and behavior to the hippies of the 60s than to the classic idea of a sea wolf. And even within the series of extravagant loners and oddballs he usually portrays, he is an unmistakable figure. The film is a lavishly made special effects spectacle full of exaggeration and simple, yet unoffensive humor. It is in the best sense of the word a family adventure film that, in my eyes, does not age and even after the third viewing, I have no need to change my opinion about it. It's just a shame about the unnecessary sequels that plundered and diluted the successful original. Overall impression: 85%.

Pitch Black (2000)

English I have never fully understood the enduring popularity of Pitch Black, which has become a small cult hit. There are even those that consider this film to be a cheap version of Alien, although upon closer inspection, it is clear that both creators were aiming for something completely different and despite the seemingly similar starting point in the form of a dangerous extraterrestrial organism, the quality of both films is light years apart. Where Scott hires top-notch theater actress, Twohy prefers a model with no film experience. Where Scott carefully builds atmosphere and works with a wide range of human emotions, from excitement of discovery to nervousness and tension, and even to sheer despair, Twohy primarily reduces his film to a routine action movie in the second half, with an invincible hero equipped with a tough shell, but a good heart. :-) The only positive aspect for me is the presence of the charming Radha Mitchell in an atypical role for her. Overall impression: 25%.

Plan B (2001)

English The fundamental blunder of the film is its weak script, compounded by Diane Keaton's overacting and unremarkable direction, and there you have it - a recipe for disaster. This pseudo-comedy is a complete miss... Unfortunately, the film isn't bad enough to elicit unintentional laughter, yet it's not good enough to intentionally entertain. Overall impression: 25%.

Planet of the Apes (1968)

English Planet of the Apes became a phenomenon in the media in its time and was one of the most famous works in the sci-fi genre, and its commercial success resulted in several sequels. Although these sequels brought the producers considerable profit with minimal expenses (they were filmed, of course, using the set and masks from the original movie), they diluted the original strength of the film. Based on the successful novel of the same name by Pierre Boulle from 1963, which, although different from its film adaptation in many aspects, is equally good and I can recommend it for its literary language and intellectual level. The film was expensive for its time and shooting with actors in masks was challenging, especially for Kim Hunter, who had a lot of screen time. The film had extraordinary success not only because of the professional work of the makeup artists who were able to create a perfect illusion of an ape civilization, but also because of the quality screenplay and clever direction. Last but not least, the film struck a chord with the spirit of the time with its dark message about the end of human civilization. The cold war was reaching its peak, which had turned unpleasantly hot in Vietnam, and politically, there was unrest on university campuses and city streets, and various apocalyptic visions were very fashionable... The film belongs to the golden standard of its genre. Overall impression: 95%.
