Black Ops (2008)

English Below-par B-movie, it’s not painful to watch, but that’s all there is to it. The premise is also dangerously similar to Outpost, a much better film.

Maniac (1980)

English Straight psychological slasher (those words don’t go very well together, but I don’t know how else to describe it) with a great Joe Spinell in the main role. The murder scenes are good, and two of them are actually excellent, it’s a shame that they aren’t supported by a better story, but let’s not kid ourselves: the psychology is good, the story not so. Without any doubt, the atmosphere reaches its peak with the toilet scene, I almost couldn’t breathe because of the tension; if the entire film was like that, it would be among my top favourite. 70% and I’m rounding up to four stars because of the poster, it’s really great.

In the Mouth of Madness (1994)

English Surprising bizarreness that every horror fan should pay attention to. The story is similar to Carpenter's contribution to Masters of Horror, Cigarette Burns, it blends reality and fiction, giving the viewer the remarkable chance to find their bearings together with the protagonist. Sam Neill’s performance is not flawless, but In the Mouth of Madness is still a film with good acting, much better than other B-movie horror. The atmosphere is really thick at times, and the little town of horrors was great.

Zombie Strippers (2008)

English Softcore porn for necrophiliacs, lol! This highly anticipated horror trash turned out to be better than I though – i.e. it was watchable. Englund has always been good playing weird perverts and that applies here, too; actually, he’s the best by far, the other actors deliver performances that are typical for bad B-movies. The make-up effects are quite good, which is something that can’t be said about the special effects, they are really terrible. The story is, it could be said, innovative – I didn’t expect to come across a new evolutionary form of the film zombie. In short, Zombie Strippers is not a big surprise. Collectors of cinema insanity will surely dig it, everyone else should ignore it. Yeah, it’s bullshit, but is not boring, so 45%.

The Blob (1988)

English Beauty! An exceptionally entertaining, thoroughbred B-movie from the 80s. The Blob relies on pure cliché, basically, it has everything that B-horror should have, which would be bad for a more ambitious film, but here it almost made me moan in pleasure. The special and make-up effects are mostly excellent and there are several scenes I will remember for a long time (the cinema, the sewers, the hospital, the phone booth). My five-star rating is very subjective, of course, but it comes form the bottom of my heart. PS: If you want to be scared, get something else.

Candyman (1992)

English Hmm, with the thunder and the hail outside Candyman was not a very easy movie to watch tonight, there were moments when I actually felt a bit scared… The original and unpredictable plot deserves a lot of praise, I was permanently curious about what would happen next. Some of the jump-scares are also great, likewise with the gore, and the thick atmosphere deserves A+. It’s a really good film on the theme of urban legends, the kind there could be a lot more of, it’s a shame that it’s still an unexploited field.

The Church (1989)

English I’m not thrilled this time, The Church was only (slightly above) average. I liked several of the atmospheric scenes, but they occur quite randomly and the scary atmosphere never manages to cover the entire film. I also like the pretty original deaths, as well as the music, which in some places was great. Unlike others, though, I didn’t like at all the first part set in the Middle Ages, I’m not a fan of historical horror and wished it would end after 10 minutes. I can’t say I got bored, but the film never managed to capture my attention. 60%

C.H.U.D. (1984)

English The name, or rather it’s meaning, hints at a lot more gory fun that what you get in the end, though the last 30 minutes at least are a good example of a typical 80s horror movie. The make-up is very good and the interesting atmosphere builds up together with the number of mutants (i.e. in the last 30 minutes). The acting is not important, and neither is the zero originality of the story – as it’s typical in films like this. It’s a pity that the plans for a Rob Zombie remake seem to have been dropped, he would have done a very good job with the material.

The Dead Zone (1983)

English Very good thriller that relies mainly on superb performances and brilliant direction. Cronenberg’s austere style fits the story, and so does the surprisingly calm and bloodless concept, which is not something usual for the director. The only thing I didn’t like is that the first twist is solved around the middle and then we start again, resulting in a film that, though effective, is not entirely solid.

Teeth (2007)

English Given the pretty promising premise, Teeth ended up being a disappointment. Both genres, horror and comedy, are present only in very small doses and the potential this film had was very far from exploited. What’s good is that it goes by quickly, so at least I didn’t get bored. Average, basically, 50% → 2* (they could have shown those teeth properly, too!).
