Muži nestárnou (1942)

English The beautiful Zita Kabátová (breathtaking in the first half-hour), the worldly Jan Pivec (especially admirable in the second "more mature" half-hour) and the swashbuckling Gustav Nezval (swashbuckling from beginning to end) age before the viewer's eyes as believably as possible with the help of masks and their acting skills. Combined with a clever screenplay (each third is a little different, although the main point is always repeated) and the brisk direction by Vladimír Slavínský, the result is a delightful film that I'll definitely watch again.

Blood Father (2016)

English A sympathetic action movie that is not as straightforward as it seems at first glance, but there is no need to think about it too much. The main thing is that Mel Gibson did not disappoint me and although I liked Get the Gringo a little more, I had fun from the beginning to the tense end, in which everything was at stake and which was... let's say typical Gibson.

Self/less (2015)

English So, after Immortals and Mirror Mirror, Tarsem Singh made things right again with me. Self/less is a great film that combined sci-fi, drama and action in the way that Steven Spielberg's Minority Report did. Quite naturally. It looks great, and I (unlike The Fall) almost did not realize that it takes two hours, and the actors and actresses were a joy to watch. The finale similar to The Old Gun made me happy, and I don't consider it as theft, but rather as an accurate and equally impressive quote.

Mrs Dulská's Morals (1958)

English I don't really know why, but I was expecting more of a comedy, and the opening minutes of Morálka paní Dulské reinforced that, so the more dramatic the film became, the more surprised I was. Hats off to Zdeňka Baldová - in her serious condition, she acted so convincingly and with such commitment that nobody would even think of her failing health.

Pete's Dragon (2016)

English A beautiful family movie. If I had to choose from the recent Disney movies, Pete's Dragon would clearly win over The Jungle Book. It doesn't need to be full of special effects and be epic from start to finish to be impressive. It does the opposite, and in my opinion much better, relying mainly on well-chosen actors and beautiful shots of magical deep forests in addition to the (great) digital dragon.

Bohéma - Past na svědomí (2017) (episode)

English An incredibly tired start and unused generous space that the central fictional couple would deserve only if they experienced something interesting, or at least a little more interesting. Unfortunately, they did not, and so they bored me. Fortunately, the second half or so was great again, because it focused on real people and events, especially the amazing Vlasta Burian of Vladimír Javorský and his colleagues and loved ones.

Lakovka (1980) (TV movie)

English I was expecting a classic "bachelor" story based on one situation, one joke and a predictable punchline, but I was pleasantly surprised that this time the one situation served as a springboard for other situations and, for a half-hour film, it created quite a decent chain of small plots. It was good to watch, of course, thanks to all the actors and actresses, none of whom did anything memorable, but they clearly had fun and so did I.

Brotherhood - The Legend of Winnetou returns - Winnetou - Der letzte Kampf (2016) (episode)

English Definitely better than the previous film, a pity only for the somewhat dull "last battle", which didn't go very well (although it was almost good compared to the last cave shootout), and the dry finale. Otherwise it was beautifully quiet, the characters mattered, and just when it looked like boredom would set in, there was the terrific negotiation with Tokvi-kawa - the highlight of the film for me.

Tomorrowland (2015)

English One of the most fantastic family films of recent times. It reminded me of the classic Disney features of decades past, as well as Pixar's current animated features (isn't that right, Brad Bird?). I don't know what others were expecting, but I get the impression that they went to see a film where they wouldn't have to engage a single thread of their brain, and they were caught off guard by the thought of Tomorrowland. It's an entertaining, sophisticated morality tale with well-chosen actors, stunning sets (the roaring Giacchino score and the first visits to the World of Tomorrow are memorable, as is the tower scene) and, above all, a clever play with the viewer, who, like the main characters, the script lures with the promise of a place where anything is possible, but doesn't forget to remind them that they have to do something to get there in the first place.

Načeradec král kibiců (1932)

English A very good comedy. I liked it more than Muži v offsidu, mainly thanks to Hugo Haas, who was also the best in the aforementioned film, although he didn't get much space. But here he excels, he is wonderfully choleric and the way he tries to tame his outbursts of anger or, to cover up his mistakes, is irresistibly funny. He is simply like Louis de Funès at his best. "Come only after the inventory." - "What is that?" - "What is that... Jewish holidays!"
