Repo Men (2010)

English "You owe it to your family. You owe it to yourself." Here we have some fooling around with human spare parts (if you count Monty Python's The Meaning of Life, which you will also see in Repo Men) for the third time and again brilliantly. This at times almost Gilliam-esque utopian, realistically shot spectacle is probably the best I've seen in a while, in every way. No, I really have nothing to complain about regarding this film. The acting trio of Law, Whitaker, Schreiber is without a single flaw, Sapochnik's (whoever he is) direction perfectly drew me into the plot and while it could have, it didn't revel in gory shots and showed everything only within the bounds of necessity. Marco Beltrami's music didn't disappoint either and I'm very happy to listen to it alone (just like the song soundtrack, if it exists).... And then there's the script. Wow, I really didn't expect such a tour de force in the last half hour. At one point I thought "Okay, it could have ended here...", but it didn't. And then there was the hallway scene (Oldboy quote - including the hammer), the wacky, bizarre and God knows what else love scene where two people cut each other with scalpels, the injection scene (Pulp Fiction reference?)... And then it was really over. A really beautiful ending that made sense of everything that seemed far-fetched a few minutes ago. However, what I miss is comedy in the genre classification of Repo Men, because the film is blackly funny and made me laugh a lot. In short, I give five pure stars and I give them very gladly.__P.S. I recommend the bonus features on the DVD - especially the Union commercials, which are also hilariously funny. Especially the funeral one.

G-Force (2009)

English It is nothing exceptional, but a relatively well-done spectacle, which aims to entertain children and adults alike. I don't know about the kids, but it amused me. The variation on the classic action spectacle schemes worked well, the digital animal spies are done very nicely and thanks to the dubbing (Sam Rockwell and Penelope Cruz especially) they are also sympathetic, the action scenes are shot with clarity, and for example the chase with the FBI cars can be envied by many. There are also quite funny lines (many of them are allusions to adult films), which are unfortunately balanced by infantile "fart" humor, the cool speech of one of the agents (dubbed by Tracy Morgan, how I hate him) and monstrosities like the final dance. The human actors aren't really worth commenting on, the only one who stands out is Bill Nighy, and he still stands out just by virtue of being Bill Nighy. It didn't offend.

Outlander (2008)

English Outlander is not a bad film. Certainly not by B-movie standards. So what do we have here? A cliché-variation on The 13th Warrior, but very pleasantly enriched with sci-fi elements. The special effects (we are still in B-movie waters) are not bad at all, except for one "dragging a guy through the wall" moment, the music is even very good, the actors too (that's because they are A-listers), the characters are mostly likable (but one of them really didn't have to be named Boromir), and the alien luminous beasts are good, it's fun to watch. The runtime doesn't matter, because whenever the film seems to run out of breath, there's a cool scene like a shield run or a flashback from outer space. Because of the sci-fi plot, I'd rather compare the film to 2010's Predators rather than the original Vikings. And although Vikings seemingly looks better, the film is a lot more boring, uninteresting and stupider. Biggest minus: A criminally underused Ron Perlman.

Rambling Engelbert (1973) (TV movie)

English I wonder what's weirder: That Juraj Herz made such an elaborate musical? That there's a medieval castle full of hippies? That Petr Čepek is playing a court jester who keeps falling down? Compared to A Night at Karlstein, which was made in the same year, Rambling Engelbert is a lot less funny, but it has a more, one could say, fairy-tale and an almost kitschy romantic atmosphere, some of its songs are irresistibly catchy (the "party" scene after Engelbert's arrival at the castle is, by the way, excellently filmed), and of course the cast is not as good. Unfortunately, Miloš Kopecký doesn't have much to do, the unsympathetic Josef Laufer, who should have stuff to do, does not know how to act and so he doesn't (but fortunately he sings well), Jitka Molavcová is cute (there's probably no other way to evaluate her performance) and the most memorable actors are Petr Čepek in the moment when he exclaims in his thunderous voice that "The buffoon is playing the buffoon in front of the buffoons!", and Václav Štekl as the monk.

Šplhající profesor (1992) (TV movie)

English Of all the Czech actors who have ever portrayed Sherlock Holmes in radio plays, my favorite was and always will be Viktor Preiss. I'm glad I got to see him in this role as well... And that he was great as always. If I add to that the fact that Dr. Watson and Professor Petr Kostka were played by Josef Somr, that it was all pleasantly funny and just long enough, I should be satisfied if... If only Zdeněk Zelenka hadn't been in charge of the processing, whose specific directorial style I will probably never like. Three and a half stars.

Kdo chce kam... (1981) (TV movie)

English The interplay between Jiří Sovák, Vladimír Menšík and Jiřina Bohdalová was rarely bad. But when it was, it was mostly the script, which didn't give the actors the polished dialogue and interesting situations they deserved. And this is the case with this film, which would have been completely unnecessary with a different cast.

The Last Rites of Ransom Pride (2010) Boo!

English The complete corruption of everything one can imagine under the term "western". There are super tough guys and gals whose toughness you don't believe in for even a second, there's a poor atmosphere supported by a script playing at philosophizing, there's an awful television-style and omnipresent awkwardness, there are "cool" shots like in CSI... No, no and no. As short as the movie is, it's stupid. And there's always shooting and blood flowing? So? Arrest the director and screenwriter, torture them, keep them locked up for a long time, torture them continuously... And then allow them to sweep public spaces.

Regarding Henry (1991)

English An unexpectedly evolving but unexpectedly heartwarming, enjoyable and now and then funny film with a perfect Harrison Ford, and you tend to believe in his original Henry and the one who came "after". Admittedly, Regarding Henry doesn't particularly stand out from Mike Nichols' filmography, but it is at the very least an interesting film that I had a nice time with thanks to how uncomplicated it was. "I'm Rudy. Rooooo-deeee."-"What's wrong with him?"-"He's an asshole."

Hachiko: A Dog's Story (2009)

English Thanks to the commendably uninspiring distributor's text on the DVD cover, I really had no idea what and who would happen in the film, whether it would be a dog or a master, and thus the story impressed me all the more in the end. Especially in the beginning it's cliché as hell, but over time Hachiko won me over in an unprecedented way and even though it brought me to tears several times, I would definitely not call it emotionally robbing or cheap. It is simply too beautiful for that.__P.S. The "dog" camera was perfect - everyone who has ever had a furry friend was sure to have appreciated it.

Real Steel (2011)

English I'll keep it short this time. Negative aspects: Incredibly unsympathetic son/brat/little monster. Too many "family aspects" in the film and the associated clichéd story (hideously ripping off Over the Top!), and the fact that it is clear how it will turn out before every robot fight. The music that's not by Danny Elfman. Idiot "cool" dances with a robot (terrrible) ___ Positives: Hugh Jackman. The music that is by Danny Elfman. Perfect, excellently animated robots with imaginative design (the cowboy!) and their realistic fights, which really made me feel like I was watching huge plated boxers hitting each other. Two and a half stars.
