Support Your Local Sheriff! (1968)

English So it happens sometimes that you come across an old school movie on Czech Television and it captivates you with its humor so similar to Bud Spencer and Terence Hill and yet so different. Moreover you might think that similar genre is no longer able to surprise you but then for 2 hours you find yourself watching and enjoying a story you have never even heard of and still you are looking forward to every scene. It hasn’t happened to me for a long time and Support Your Local Sheriff showed me that film-making craftsmanship is still able to surprise me.

Bloodshot (2020)

English I don’t really know what to say about Bloodshot. Vin Diesel is evidently trying to film something new probably to expand his usual set of scenes. And basically it is just the same as with Riddick. In this case, it is based on a comic book but in reality it is boring, has some action scenes that from time to time look good but are cut in a way that prevents you from seeing what is happening.

Quiz (2020) (series)

English A great British mini-series that emanates exactly what I like about British production – not overused and original life story that is kind of ordinary at the same time as well and has an unobtrusive sense of humor. Moreover the British have a gift to show life stories in a naive form. That is what they do and when it is done well it is really a pleasure to watch. And what’s more, this 3 episode long series not only tells a story about a millionaire but with its premise reaches also behind the scenes of this popular TV show which was really interesting for me. Overall I have to say that even though it had 3 episodes there wasn’t one boring moment for me. Quite the opposite, I learned quite a few things and had fun as well. So why shouldn’t something this good get 5-star rating?

Rukojemník (2014)

English I don’t really get why Slovak movies are dubbed in Czechia. Every time it happens, it makes the movie less believable. On the other hand, this movie is great in itself. I haven’t seen domestic (or Slovak) movie which would portray serious premises (in this case it was the Communist era) in such a fresh form from the point of view of a child in a long time. Juraj Nvota found a gap on the market and made it really worth it. The atmosphere was great, everything was nicely genuine, humane and it was really pleasurable and enjoyable to watch. A hidden gem among Czechoslovakian cinematography that deserves better rating than the one on this site.

Jumanji: The Next Level (2019)

English At first I thought I was mistaken and I’m watching the first movie of this quasi reboot which shouldn't be even called a reboot according to the creators. I think that this is a standard Hollywood way of making the most out of something that was already there and worked and it doesn’t really matter if it is a remake or a reboot. Nevertheless one thing that cannot be denied is that this movie has a good cast. Their performances were perfect again. But the pity is that what I laughed at the most in this movie was a joke about Andrej Babiš created by translation. Otherwise it is just average. It doesn’t offend, the action scenes are really childish but overall it is quite OK. But for this movie to become a record-breaking blockbuster it should have a totally different premise with different dialogues of that kind that you don’t want to forget. But Hollywood has probably already forgotten how to make this kind of cinematography...

Project Power (2020)

English If there was something done right by Netflix here it was its choice of actors. I quite missed Jamie Foxx and Joseph Gordon-Levitt and even though Project Power is quite dumb I was able to watch it because of them. Moreover the action scenes weren’t boring at all. The premise was really stupid and I could imagine these actors in something a lot better. But I would probably have to wait for it...

Bille (2018)

English As was mentioned before this is a Latvian carbon copy of Barefoot. What this movie offers is a beautifully magical atmosphere of Riga during ‘30s, equally beautiful countryside, a lot of attitudes and truths, insights into hard lives of people who had no idea that war was coming, a lot of positive moments of a child’s mind set which is perfectly portrayed here and mainly quality movie-making which Latvians are famous for. I liked Bille and am glad I was able to see it thanks to Cinemax and see the life of a lady poet that was nominated for the Nobel Prize.

Corporate Animals (2019)

English Didn’t Ed Helms really know what movie he was in? It is not even funny. Moreover Demi Moore was really repulsive here...

The Glenn Miller Story (1954)

English That overly positive atmosphere of Hollywood during ‘50s is really crazy. Or to be clear it is not something I would prefer. But when Glenn Miller talks and plays with his band it is so brilliant that you can never get enough of it.

Pay the Ghost (2015)

English `Nicolas Cage` is the name that speaks for itself nowadays but it is a set of mind as well. He seems to be frozen in time, still doing his own mystical thing that if not overly extravagant can be quite enjoyable. Pay the Ghost is just like that. I wouldn’t even say I watched a B-rated movie. I quite liked it. At first it comes across as psychological drama that turns into horror and finally some Celtic mythology gets mixed into the premise so you get a feeling that you’re watching some kind of independent continuation of National Treasure. I like that type of movies, it reminds me of ‘90s including the movie’s ending and I don’t have any reason not to return to those movies. So Nicolas, you got me with this one. A good old-school mysterious thriller.
