Czterej pancerni i pies (1966) (series)

English This brings back memories of my childhood. It was one of those things I grew up with together with my friends. We often played at it and I always was Gustik. I'm sure I'd look at it differently today, but back then I lived it. I can't avoid the nostalgia in this case

The Big Store (1973)

English The four madmen of Les Charlots are at the forefront of the struggle for the survival of a small shop that is facing stiff competition from a large supermarket. Entertaining and in many places relevant today. When I occasionally walk among the shelves of the nearby big supermarket, I sometimes remember the sabotage antics of Les Charlots. All you need is a toy catapult, a cake with whipped cream and the show can begin.

The Man from Acapulco (1973)

English Twice the best. The best parody of trash literature with an invincible agent and the best film with Belmondo. Plus the beautiful Jacqueline Bisset, so there's no argument. Smart and funny entertainment.

Death Watch (1980)

English Journalist Harvey Keitel has a camera built in his eye and secretly films a woman dying of cancer. Every once in a while, he has to put a certain substance in his eye for the camera so he doesn't go blind. Sure, it sounds a bit stupid, but the film is surprisingly pretty good. It’s quite dark, and I like that.

The Name of the Rose (1986)

English Annaud does not present us, like most other filmmakers, with a slick medievalism, but with a dirty era, dirty and ugly people, his vision of the Middle Ages is flawless. Connery's scholarly demeanor exudes respect and wisdom, I'd go to hell and back with him. The book is supposedly much better, but those who haven't read it may not care, the film is excellent.

Les Misérables (1958)

English The best adaptation of “Les Misérables” may be the one by Robert Hossein starring Lino Ventura, but the best Jean Valjean will forever remain the one who walks in the body of Jean Gabin. A film classic.

Asterix vs. Caesar (1985)

English It's a bit better, but in my opinion what I wrote about Asterix the Gaul still applies: Asterix is better to read than to watch. Some of my friends, also Asterix fans, have the same opinion, so I hope I'm not being too subjective. The books are brilliant, the animated versions are botched, and Goscinny and Uderzo have disowned them.

Asterix the Gaul (1967)

English There’s no biggest fan of Asterix than me, I grew up with the comics and I know most of the stories by heart. That's why I can't accept its animated form, which is a mere pastiche compared to the books. What happened to Goscinny's clever humour? Where is Uderzo's artistic brilliance? Both of Asterix's "spiritual fathers" have nothing to do with the animated films and the result shows it. Asterix is for me an intelligent kind of humour, like Cimrman here for example, but the animated versions are not like that and they are quite different from the printed ones, they lack the ambiguous humour. You'd better read Asterix.

Wyatt Earp (1994)

English An epic western that doesn't lack any of the attributes needed for this genre, but is very tedious in places. The big surprise for me is the infirm and emaciated gunslinger in a riveting performance by Denis Quaid. Costner with a wig as a young man looks a bit out of place, but otherwise he's pretty OK. It wasn’t a second Dances with Wolves, Wyatt Erp was a commercial flop, but I think it's undeserved.

Sophie's Choice (1982)

English A phenomenal performance by Meryl Streep. The film has two storylines, one taking place after the war, the other in the memories of the main character. While in the first case the film is not very convincing, Sophie's memories of her time in the extermination camp are absolutely horrifying and haunting. I'll never forget the shot of an emaciated Streep walking through the mud alongside the low pens crowded with Jews, with a massive, ominously smoking chimney in the background.
