Spy (2015)

English Rough, smart, well-written, well-directed, surprising and incredibly funny. I really wouldn't have expected any of those adjectives in a Melissa McCarthy movie a week ago, and while there are a few weak spots and some of the jokes don't quite hit the mark, the funny ones are still significantly more. And Jason Statham is absolutely awesome!

The Horseman (2008)

English A wonderfully gritty, dirty and minimalist revenge flick with a typically nasty Australian vibe. Yes, I enjoyed it.

How to Train Your Dragon (2010)

English Leave the little kids at home, take the bigger ones to the cinema and they’ll leave you alone until Christmas. A great adventure flick without annoying cheerful characters, with top action and a dragon that everyone would like to have at home.

Who's Afraid of the Wolf (2008)

English What does a family crisis look like from the perspective of a preschool-age girl? Very interesting. Who's Afraid of the Wolf is on a European level technically, in the acting and the script, and shows that Czech cinema doesn't automatically have to equal the boredom we usually see.

Eden Lake (2008)

English A trip to a lake turns into a fight for survival when a loving couple pisses off a bunch of local teenagers. An unoriginal but very impressive and suspenseful film that people with weaker stomachs may not be able to handle, but fans of the British new wave of horror will definitely be very satisfied.

Death Race (2008)

English A thoroughbred action B-movie that runs like a well-oiled machine. Paul W.S. Anderson has plenty of ideas and isn't afraid to use them, so get ready for proper violence, rock music and badass wisecracks at their best. So what if it's all incredibly stupid?

The Strangers (2008)

English Two heroes, three psychopaths, one house and a fight for survival. The Strangers may be a hopelessly unoriginal horror film, but who cares when most of the time the atmosphere and tension work perfectly?

Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008)

English Guillermo Del Toro did exactly what was expected of him. The film looks like it cost three times as much as it actually did, and the parade of entertaining action scenes, monsters and original ideas is almost never-ending. Unfortunately, the film loses its pace when it works with emotions. Nevertheless, Hellboy and his crew saving the world from an invincible army is definitely worth a cinema visit, because it's still a damn good film.

Elite Squad (2007)

English Rio de Janeiro is full of pissed off drug dealers and gangs, and they must be taken off the streets before the Pope comes to visit. The elite BOPA unit will be happy to do the job. A very impressive and well shot action drama about how life in Brazil is far from idyllic. But this audiovisual and atmospheric banger has a problem with perhaps too radical ideas in the script.

The Orphanage (2007)

English A well done genre work that has everything one expects from a ghost story. But not a jot more.
