Biography

He began his career in the early 90s, producing audiovisual creations for prestigious artists and companies in the visual and performing arts such as La Fura dels Baus and Sol Picó, among others. During the same decade, he settled in Mexico and traveled frequently to Cuba and India to produce various essays on visual anthropology. In 1998, he returned to Catalonia to direct the telefilm Renda antiga, and that same year he premiered the short film 0’7 YA! In 2000 he presented his first feature film, Tatawo, with international distribution under the name Tatoo bar. In 2005 he directed El Taxista Ful, which obtained a special mention from the jury at the San Sebastián Film Festival and the Jules Verne award for best film at the Nantes Spanish Film Festival. In 2010, he premiered the documentary Fake orgasm, which won the Silver Viznaga Award for Best Film at the Malaga Film Festival and for Best Documentary and the Audience Award at the Queer Festival in Bangalore, among others. In 2012, he wrote El somni dels germans Roca, directed by Franc Aleu. In 2016, he premiered his movie Vivir y otros ficciones. The film won the Antigone d’Or Award for Best Film, the Best Soundtrack award and the Radio Nova Award at the CINEMED Festival in Montpellier, the Violette d’Or at the Cinespaña Festival and the Audience Award at the Festival Abycine, in addition to several jury awards at the Nantes Festival, the Buenos Aires Human Rights Festival and the Gibara Festival in Cuba, and the audience award at Oliviere Père ´s ARTE ArteKino festival. In 2018 he wrote, produced and directed the series Trèvols de 4 fulles, awarded with the Zapping for the best local TV series. Armugán, made in 2020, has won the Ecumenical Jury Award for best film and the award for its soundtrack at the Tallinn Black Nights International Film Festival. In 2021 he premiered the documentary essay Nos Queda la Noche, as well as a retrospective exhibition of his work at the Palau de la Virreina in Barcelona: Jo Sol, La noche incandescente, curated by Valentín Roma.
