Selina Lim

Biography

Selina Lim is a BAFTA-nominated screenwriter. From north London and now based in Oxford, Selina obtained a BA in English Literature and Creative Writing from the University of East Anglia before delving into the world of TV production at TNTV and Rapture TV, during which time she ran the Soho House Women in Media group. Selina also worked as a web journalist for Guinness World Records, Unique, and C4's Big Brother before leaving to spend a year teaching English in Japan.

On her return to England, Selina moved to Oxford to work in educational publishing. In 2009, she decided to put her years of 'research' on the sofa in front of the TV to good use and signed up to a screenwriting course at Film Oxford. Although always a creator of short stories, poetry and comedy sketches through the years, it was through this course that Selina discovered her passion and talent for writing screenplays. Her films may be described as black comedies, but Selina's main intentions, whatever the genre, are to entertain, surprise and challenge stereotypes.

Selina Lim's first film Painkiller was commissioned in 2011 as part of CINEAST, a digital short film programme produced by BBC Writersroom and B3 Media. Starring Benedict Wong (Moon, Prometheus) and Franz Drameh (Attack the Block), it was directed by Screen International Star of Tomorrow 2012 director Mustapha Kseibati. The film previewed at Encounters Film Festival in 2011 and premiered at Rushes Soho Shorts 2012 in competition for Best Short. It was also part of the official selection at the London Short Film Festival 2013 and London Comedy Film Festival 2013 where it was nominated for the Discovery Award.

Selina's next script, a 30-minute black comedy Keeping up with the Joneses, was one of 16 scripts selected from nearly a thousand entries as part of the BFI Short Film Fund 2012 programme. Starring Maxine Peake (Silk, Shameless) and Adeel Akhtar (Four Lions), it was commissioned by the BFI and Lighthouse with a top-end budget and was directed by award-winning and BAFTA-nominated director Michael Pearce. The film was part of the official selection at the BFI London Film Festival 2013 and the London Short Film Festival 2014 and has also been selected for the Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival 2014. Keeping Up with the Joneses has been nominated for a BAFTA Award for Best British Short Film in 2014 and won the Best Thriller Short Award at the London Short Film Festival 2014.
