Biography

Fatih Akin, the son of Turkish immigrants, studied film at Hamburg's Hochschule für Bildende Künste.

Besides acting (in addition to roles in several of his own films, he has appeared in Back in Trouble, Kismet, Planet of the Cannibals, and A Goddamn Job), he has directed numerous music videos. After shooting several short films (Sensin – You're the One!, 1995; Weed, 1996), he made his feature film debut in 1998 with Short Sharp Shock (Kurz und schmerzlos).

This was followed by In July (2000), Solino (2002) and his most successful work to date Head-On (2003), which won the Golden Bear at the Berlinale, the European Film Award for Best Film, and many other prizes. Akin's other films include The Edge of Heaven (2007), Soul Kitchen (2009, Special Jury Prize at the Venice International Film Festival), The Cut (2014) and Goodbye Berlin (Tschick, 2016).
