Yorgos Zois was born in Athens in 1982. He studied applied Math & Nuclear Physics at the NTUA and film direction at Stavrakou Film School, Athens and UdK Berlin with scholarship.
His debut short film Casus Bellipremiered at the 67th Venice Film Festival in 2010, competing at numerous international film festivals: Rotterdam, Clermont Ferrand, Tokyo Short Shorts, Palm Springs, LA Short Fest, among others, and winning multiple first awards and distinctions. It also won best short film in 2011 from the Greek Film Academy and further six awards at the Greek National Drama Short Film Festival including best film, best director, best script.
His second short film, Out of Frame premiered at the 69th Venice Film Festival in 2012 and won the EFA award for Best European short film and several other distinctions for its visual form and concept of narration in festivals around the world. In 2012 Zois received a nomination for best European film director from the European Film Academy.
His first feature film Interruption made its world wide premiere at the 72nd international Venice Film Festival in section Orizzonti that represents the latest aesthetic and expressive trends in international cinema. The film raised highly acclaimed reviews all around the world about its meta aesthetics and daring narration while praised European directors such as Ruben Ostlund and Roman Gavras have expressed their warm admiration. The film still continues its festival journey (Istanbul, Palm Springs, Sarajevo, Mumbai, Vilnius, Sao Paolo etc). In Greece it received nine nominations from the Greek Film Academy and won the Best Newcomer director award.
Zois has directed many TV ads for some of the biggest companies and institutions in Greece such as OTE TV, Aegean Airlines, Plaisio, Interamerican Insurance, Ministry of Culture, Pfizer, The National Theater etc. He also directed the 2011 Athens Biennale spot that was banned from Greek National TV, prompting widespread support and heightened interest from the press and social media.
