Biography
Born in 1923 in Senegal, dying in Dakar in 2007, Ousmane Sembène was a director, scriptwriter and writer known for his political and social activism. In 1966 his first feature film, Black Girl, won the Prix Jean Vigo. The Money Order (1968) was awarded the International Critics’ Award at Venice, while The Camp at Thiaroye obtained the Special Jury Prize at the same Festival in 1988 although it was censored in France and not seen until the mid 1990s. Moolaadé (2004) won the Un Certain Regard Prize at Cannes. In 2006 he was made an «Officier de l’ordre de la Légion d’honneur de la République française».
