Biography

Makoto Shinkai directed, in 2002, his first short film, Hoshi no koe (Voices of a Distant Star), on which he did just about everything. Since then, he has become one of the leading exponents of Japanese animation thanks to titles such as Kumo no muko, yakusoku no basho (The Place Promised in Our Early Days, 2004), Byosoku 5 senchimetoru (5 Centimeters per Second, 2007), Best Animated Film at the Asia Pacific Screen Awards, Koto no ha no niwa (The Garden of Words, 2013) Best Animated Film at the Stuttgart Festival, and Kimi no na wa (Your Name, 2016), his greatest success to date, screened out of competition in the Official Selection at the San Sebastian Festival. Tenki no ko (Weathering With You) was presented at the Toronto Festival.
