He was a member of Max Reinhardt’s theater company until he started acting in movies in 1913. He was admired for his comic roles during the Weimar era, and he eventually began to write and direct his own films. Thanks to the international success of films like Carmen (1918) and Madame du Barry (1919), Mary Pickford contracted him as a director in the United States.
