Robert Wiene (1873-1938) was one of the most important German silent film makers. He had studied law, but went into theater and then film. After a number of films he found himself in the horror The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (Das Kabinet des Doctor Caligari, 1920). From his dozens of other films we'll name Crime and Punishment (1923), The Hands of Orlac (Orlacs Hände, 1924) and Der Rosenkavalier (1925). Wiene later shot sound films as well, his first being the drama The Other (Der Andere, 1930).
