Biography
Václav Vorlíček studied film direction at FAMU (1956) and debuted with The Lupínek Case (1960), aimed at children. He created movies for young audiences throughout his career, in particular adaptations of classic fairy tales (Three Wishes for Cinderella, 1973; The Prince and the Evening Star, 1978; The Firebird, 1997) but also modern fairy and fantasy stories set in the present (The Girl on a Broomstick, 1971; Arabella, 1979; Hamster in a Nightshirt, 1988), which he expanded into major television series on several occasions.
Together with Oldřich Lipský he is regarded as a master of Czech comedy, introducing his own fantastic elements, crazy humour and sci-fi motifs (You Are a Widow, Sir!, 1970; How to Drown Dr Mráček, 1974; A Nice Plate of Spinach, 1977).
Miloš Macourek wrote the scripts for the majority of his films, whose cast of much-loved comic actors contributed considerably to their huge popularity.
