Biography

He got his start as a film critic, and in 1972 he published the seminal book "Transcendental Style in Film: Ozu, Bresson, Dreyer". Two years later he released his debut screenplay, co-writing the thriller Yakuza, directed by Sydney Pollack. His collaboration with Martin Scorsese would provide masterpieces like Taxi Driver (1976) and Raging Bull (1980). In 1978 he debuted as a director with Blue Collar, launching a career that includes titles like Hardcore (1979), Cat People (1982), Affliction (1997), The Canyons (2013) or Dog Eat Dog (2016).
