Biography

Pakistani filmmaker who received his bachelor’s degree in anthropology from the Lahore University of Management Sciences and his MFA in film directing from Columbia University, School of Arts. His first short film Pasban (The Caretaker, 2017) screened at numerous festivals around the globe. In 2018 he directed Nice Talking To You, that made the BAFTA Shortlist for Best Student Film and won the Kodak Student Scholarship Gold Award. His short film Darling (2019) was the first Pakistani film to premiere at the Venice Film Festival where it won the Orizzonti Prize for Best Short Film. Joyland (2022), his first feature film, won the Queer Palm and the Un Certain Regard Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival.
