Biography

Sofia Alaoui was born to a Moroccan father and a French mother and grew up between Morocco and China. After graduating from high school in Casablanca, she moved to Paris to study film. In 2017 she returned to Morocco to develop her own production company, Jiango Films. She has directed both documentary and fiction short films that have been selected in many festivals. Her short film Qu'importe si les bêtes meurent (So What If the Goats Die) was shot in the Atlas Mountains, with non-professional actors and exclusively using Tamazight, one of the most widely spoken Berber languages in Morocco. It won the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival in 2020, and the César for Best Fiction Short Film in 2021. She then directed a fantastic short film for 20th Century Fox, The Lake.
