Biography

Francesco Barilli has worked as an actor, director, screenwriter and painter. A descendant of a famous family of artists, he began his career when he was twenty, when filmmaker Antonio Pietrangeli gave him a small role in a movie shot in his hometown. Barilli got his first starring role in 1964 and thanks to another filmmaker from Parma, Bernardo Bertolucci, who directed him in Before the Revolution. After working as an assistant director, he debuted behind the camera with Nardino sul Po. In the seventies, he rose to be one of the great names in genre cinema thanks to Il profumo della signora in nero and Pensione paura, two cult movies in Italian filmmaking. He’s worked abundantly in fiction, documentaries and advertising.
