Biography

Director, screenwriter and a novelist. His career started in theater, when he was twenty years old and then started writing. He made his director's debut with the film Green Fish, a film noir, "unique amongst those in the genre." Green Fish was an exploration of the genre conventions and of the real world. He continued his exploration of life and cinema with Peppermint Candy, in which he experimented with the use of flashbacks within a narative. In Oasis, he cuestioned the true nature of people's comunication. It was with this two films that he received the critic's plaudits, as well as popular success worldwide. With Oasis, he won Best Director in the Venice Film Festival. En 2003 he was named tourism and culture minister. Once his dutty ended, he directed his fourth film, Secret Sunshine. The highly regarded acting job of Jeon Do-yeon, as the tormented Shin-ae, granted her the Best Actor award at Cannes, in 2007. His fith film, Poetry, won Best Screenplay award at Cannes as well as other prestigious awards. After Poetry, he made his return with Burning.
