Several women from one family are confronted with hardship and trauma which typically stem from the way they are treated by men and, in turn, by the whole of society. Whether it’s a case of having to deal with the stigma of HIV or suicidal thoughts on maternity leave, Vesela Kazakova, together with Mina Mileva and the entire collective, offers an explosive drama as a searing indictment of patriarchal values and their impact on the lives of women in contemporary Bulgaria. This is a supposed tear-jerker drama about how all good women have to suffer, and how their suffering is caused solely by men who are obviously evil. Despite the one-sidedness of the narrative and the harsh screaming, it is an adequate movie with a relatively working chemistry between the central members of one Bulgarian family at its core, backed up by some solid performances. A more apt title would be "Women Suffer" because all the female characters in this film really only suffer. Instead of an intense statement about the complicated position of women in Eastern Europe (as complicated it undoubtedly is), it is a screaming hysteria in which there is not a single (at the very least) neutral male character. From a purely cinematic point of view, it's quite watchable, but the one-sided perspective brings the overall result down a lot. 45% [KVIFF 2021]
