Sensitive story about two British soldiers in Italy, Cotten and Sully. Sully has Cotten write letters to his girl back home for him. The girl, Jones, falls in love with Sully but he is nothing like the man of the letters. Jones marries Sully but is quickly disillusioned by the rough way in which she is treated. One night after a drunk, Sully beats Jones and her stepmother stabs Sully to death. The girl goes into shock which makes her an amnesiac while her stepmother suffers a stroke and becomes speechless. Jones is accused of murder and sentenced to one year in jail. Hearing of his former friend's mysterious murder, Cotten visits Jones and immediately falls in love with her.
