This film is a very good demonstration of how the French are able to make a historical film and make no bones about it. It's very realistic, it's very dirty and it's pretty damn gritty in places! Germinal is about a French history that certainly wasn't always pretty and found itself in alleys that led nowhere but to bloodshed.
