This film is set in a barren environment, in a pump-house fabricated from plank. It's the history of the relationship of a veteran of 1919 and a disabled, limping boy. Their job is to handle the pump in case of flood or underground fire. The Old Man decides to make a man of the boy and one night he tests him by ringing the alarm. The Boy holds out, but rebels against the Old Man's despotic personality and ideas. Gradually they get accustomed to each other and the Old Man tells him about the two murders that distress him and the Boy becomes interested. The Old Man's painful life and death leave deep marks on him. (official distributor synopsis)
