Plots(1)

In Amy Heckerling's hilarious send-up of 1930s gangster films, Michael Keaton stars as Johnny Dangerously, a devoted son who turns to a life of crime in order to pay for his mother's operation. As a dapper kingpin, he manages to provide support for her never-ending medical problems while romancing a steamy torch singer (Marilu Henner), battling arch-rival Danny Vermin (Joe Piscopo) and exposing a corrupt D.A. (Danny DeVito). (official distributor synopsis)

English Amy Heckerling directing Michael Keaton in a parody of gangster movies just like the ones generations loved with James Cagney? Yes, indeed, such a film exists. :) It’s dangerously funny, clever, and typical of Amy in many ways. This is beautiful work. I'll have to make time for the remaining white spaces in her filmography because regardless of the stars she works with (does Keaton have a single weak role?) or the subject matter, she has an exceptional feel for whatever she's doing. The original approach, which makes her consciously go beyond conventional editing work or the way she crosses the fourth wall, is just the cherry on top. Amy Heckerling grew out of the playful 80s, and we can only regret that she makes so few films today. ()

English I may be too harsh about this parody of mafia movies, but unfortunately, it is based on too simplistic and cheaper humor, exactly the kind that I dislike and avoid as much as possible. The individual gags could be functional, but they are devalued by the effort to appeal to the widest range of viewers. There are definitely worse comedy movies than this one, but I had a major problem finishing it. The observation that Michael Keaton in this film acts like Jim Carrey did at the beginning of his career is quite accurate. Unfortunately. Overall impression: 25%. ()
