Jack Hawkins as an insurance investigator who discovers that Dennis Price is selling valuable paintings to rich Americans and substituting forgeries that are mysteriously destroyed in fires, thus collecting twice for the same paintings. Hawkins reserves judgment, however, because Price happens to be married to his old flame Arlene Dahl, and he fears she may be implicated in the scheme. So Hawkins snoops around on his own time, and Price solves his dilemma by accidentally killing himself in one of his own fires. This opens the door for a rekindled romance between Hawkins and Dahl, and, after a decent interval, they marry. Unfortunately, there are those who surmise that Hawkins and Dahl had planned things to work out this way from the beginning. A subsequent police investigation brings a few aspects of paranoia and strain to the romance, but, as usual, all winds up for the best. (official distributor synopsis)
