Sir Edward Markham is the victim of a voodoo curse which has caused his face to become horribly disfigured. He is kept captive in the attic of his house by his brother Julian (Vincent Price). Sir Edward escapes, moves in with an unscrupulous doctor who hires grave robbers to steal bodies for his research, wears a red hood over his face, and kills a good number of townspeople before the surprise ending... The Oblong Box is a film that has a pretty good atmosphere at times, which was also the foundation for its creation. It's truly a gothic atmosphere, aided by the time period in which the story takes place, as well as some ornate yet eerie interiors. The main lead actors are good, although Christopher Lee is somewhat sidelined. Vincent Price, however, as usual, handles his main role brilliantly.

This is a slightly weaker attempt by American International Pictures to follow up on Roger Corman's stylish adaptations of the works of Edgar Allen Poe. Although Vincent Price is in the main role, he is relatively put in the background of the story, and the other supporting actors are given more room to perform (among them the co-star Christopher Lee). It has a fine atmosphere and mise-en-scene, however, it only functions as a horror in a small way, which is due to the relatively average direction by Gordon Hessler.
