This adaptation of Jean Cocteau’s eponymous one-act play (1940) is, as the director puts it, “as formally austere as a prayer” and talks about a woman’s suffering and her indifferent lover. It was initially written for Edith Piaf who excelled in the play on stage. (Summer Film School)
