Tarján Sándor, lieutenant, falls in love with Vilma, who is the younger sister of Jób Árpád, Tarján's captain. The lieutenant proposes to Vilma, but his plans for marriage fall through when count Jób Ferenc, Vilma's father, who has in the meantime gone bankrupt and is trying to protect his daughter from the consequences of this bankruptcy, successfully dissuades Tarján from marrying his daughter. The only alternative for Vilma now is to marry the landowner in the neighbourhood, a man of wealth, baron Merlin. Tarján is challenged to a duel by Jób Árpád, who mistakenly thinks that the lieutenant has changed his mind because the fa-mily has lost its fortune. Sándor gets seriously wounded in the duel. The film concludes by Vilma running after the ambulance carrying Tarján, having learned that Tarján had only put up with the injustice of these accusations to protect her happiness.
