1921. A death sentence awaits Szabó Ferenc, the previous people's deputy commissar, in the prison of Vác. His fiancée sends him a message, asking him to escape and ensuring him that she will help him get over the border. Szabó is sent to work in the garden with his prison-mates. In an unguarded moment, he jumps over the fence. Balogh Béla accompanies him and the sick Schönfeld conceals them. The pursuing team is led by Szabó's old enemy, captain Pokol Tamás. The border is closed down. The runaways go to all their acquaintances, while Pokol continues to chase them. Szabó's fiancée is arrested. In the crowd of the May Day festival in Győr, he meets the captain face to face, but manages to escape with the support of the workers. Pokol dies in an accident during the hunt, and Szabó and his friends manage to get over the border. (official distributor synopsis)
