English While Love in the Ring was a sensation in March 1930 in the form of a part-talkie starring the debuting Max Schmeling, a few years later a new distribution version was made for the Anglo-Saxon market under the title The Comeback, with Schmeling's previous sports biography as a new component. In this edited form, the film is available on DVD, and if anyone watched it for reasons other than Schmeling's personality and career, they would be disappointed. Yet the film also features the great Max Machon, Schmeling's partner, coach and manager, playing practically himself. Not many minutes remain of the original story of a young athlete who has trouble choosing between the cute Renate Müller and the spicy Olga Tschechowa. As a reference experience, however, it's good. Finally, Max and Olga formed a real couple at the time, and they broke up in August 1930 when Max first saw Anna Ondra in Fairground People. But that's another story... ()
