The rover of the roads, Rostás Péter, is attacked and wounded by a Gypsy lad because he believes him to have seduced his lover. The wounded young man is taken care of by the beautiful Julis in a fishermen's village by the Tisza. Mutual sympathy develops between Péter and the young woman, apparently unhappy by her severe husband's side. Their emotions are only expressed in a few short glances. Her husband pays secret night visits to a beautiful Gypsy girl. One night, he is found dead. Suspicion falls upon Péter, but it turns out that he was stabbed by her lover. Péter fights with the murderer, the slippery bank collapses under their feet, the lad dies and Péter becomes lame. Julis leaves for her elder brother in Hortobágy. When she learns that Péter abandoned wandering as a result of his bad leg and became a ferryman on the Tisza, she returns to him. (official distributor synopsis)
