Meryl Streep and Sam Neill star in this documentary style film adaptation of the true story of Lindy and Michael Chamberlain, an Australian couple who lived the nightmare of losing their infant daughter during a family camping trip. When Lindy (Streep) spies a dingo nearby, authorities launch a frantic search, but all they find is a torn, bloodied garment. The press, distressed by the mother's seeming "lack of emotion," and suspicious of her strict Seventh Day Adventist religious beliefs, begin to accuse her of murdering the baby. The sentiment against her begins to grow, and soon the whole continent is talking about the case in a malicious witch hunt. Despite the lack of evidence, Lindy Chamberlain is imprisoned; although investigators eventually reexamine her story, the damage is done: the innocent mother's relationship with her husband has been irreparably destroyed and she has spent over three years in prison for a crime she did not commit. English This is a very interesting drama in and of itself. It points out that if you want to fight for the truth in today’s rather difficult times, you have to sacrifice your own life. Not that I’ve never heard that before, but Meryl Streep and Sam Neill fought for that family like no one in no other movie did. When I imagine this in real life, which is something the movie tried to make me do about every ten minutes, I realize that not everyone has such a harsh life. And this movie was very strong in that aspect. What was worse was the rather strong connection to religion, Christianity, and the Church that we should really call a “cult” in this case. Everyone can interpret that in their own way. In any case, even the others around those people did not have very healthy opinions, so the movie actually called out both sides. I think that only time will tell which one of these two sides they’ll incline towards – the one that is able to show some respect or the one that doesn’t recognize any alternative opinions. ()
