Henry Chinaski (Matt Dillon) considers himself a writer and on occassion writes. Mostly he quests for the booze and women that sidetrack and seduce, rather than inspire greatness. When he falls for Jan (Lili Taylor), the souldful connection fails to save either from their self-destructive ways, and the relationship totters between earnest connection and reflective loathing. English Factotum is a very funny ode to the life of a likeable loser. With its well-aimed dry humor, the film shines a light on Matt Dillon’s hidden acting talent. Marisa Tomei and Lili Taylor are also excellent as his eccentric lovers. I’m not giving Factotum a full five-star rating only because the reflective level of the film doesn’t crystallize into something more solid, or rather something more familiar to me. I have never been as close to the botttom as the protagonist. As alternative entertainment, however, it’s as good as anything by Jim Jarmusch. ()
