Plots(1)

Set in 1960s London, the film focuses on Laura Quinn (Demi Moore), a woman so driven she's chosen career over personal life and found her way into the boys' club known as the diamond business. As Laura gets overlooked for a manager position year after year, she resolves to work even harder, hoping that, despite her history, her efforts will one day pay off. Ironically, it's Mr. Hobbs (Michael Caine), a night janitor, who takes note of Laura's frustration. The seemingly simple Mr.Hobbs finds a way to use this to his advantage, proposing a plan that will only work with Laura's cooperation. When Laura rejects the offer, Mr. Hobbs encourages her to question just what's holding her back, personally and professionally. While Laura's precarious position within a male-dominated world gives her understandable motive, Mr. Hobbs's is trickier to decipher. (official distributor synopsis)

English In some ways, the film reminds me of the production of classic British crime comedies from the 50s and 60s. It is a sympathetic film with a solid script and an outstanding Michael Caine, where only Demi Moore in the main female role slightly spoils my excellent impression, as I truly don't like her and consider her an average actress. Just as the 19th century had the Count of Monte Cristo as its avenging angel, Michael Radford has his cleaner Hobbes, who - although just before retirement - can bring a powerful global corporation to despair along with its numerous security guards and excellent lawyers. Because I consider the script to be the most important aspect when reviewing movies, I lean toward a high rating here. In its essence, it is a simple plan that doesn't need any fancy high-tech gadgets and yet works perfectly. Overall impression: 85%. ()

English A very good, enjoyable film with (how else) a great Michael Caine and an equal co-star in Demi Moore. An offbeat plot ending with a twist that makes you go "Aha!" ()
