Plots(1)

This is not a love story though it is full of love. It is not a comedy though the characters often say funny things. It is not a detective story even though the hero is trying to solve a murder. It is not a nature drama though it shows the splendid colors and customs of the countryside. It is not a musical though Lubica expresses her longing in a passionate dance. Nor is it a film about ghosts though a ghost does ask the hero for a favor. A few draughts of Strawberry Wine are enough to take us into a magical world in the true center of Europe, where love, crime and penitence are just as much a part of life as the changing of the seasons, the migration of birds or the flowing of a mountain stream. English Strawberry Wine is a surprisingly beautiful spiritual experience, a fusion of the existential and the animal to a degree that you must meet with open arms. If only because Zuzana Fialová is a flawless animal vamp - a little bit Carmen, a little bit Ophelia. With beautiful soft diction, the canvas can never have too much of her. Or perhaps it's because Jiří Macháček became an actor far removed from the caricatures of Czech films only this time around. He managed to find in himself a realistic interpretation of a man who lives his whole life in a short period of time and can thus begin to live another. It doesn't make fun of itself and it doesn't waste any of the masks. It is simply good. The scenery is magical, the music pleasing to the ear, and technically, it is very captivating. ()
