In the café, old Dragomír is happy to tell stories of his adventurous life if he is paid a drink. This time it goes about his youth spent in Braila, Romania. His beautiful but jealously guarded mother and his elder sister were surrounded by a multitude of suitors, dance and revelry intolerable for his father and elderly brothers. Once they were against them so wildly that they had to flee with Dragomír. From this time on their ways were separate. Dragomír met Codin, the ill-famed former prisoner lad, who accepted him to be his blood-brother, and treated him accordingly, even during the great cholera epidemy. Due to his jealousy Codin found himself in jail soon again and Dragomír was taken by a Turk, called Nazim, to Istambul, where he was sexually abused. He never again saw his mother and he could spot his sister only once, passing in a coach. (official distributor synopsis)
